Embracing the Bubble

Everyone has heard the expression → “You are invading my personal bubble!” This statement may seem funny…especially when you have a picture of a bunch of people walking around surrounded by plastic casings that look like something straight out of Bubble Boy in your head. Now what if we told you that knowing where a person’s “personal bubble” is and knowing how to interact and respect that space could help you in the workplace? 

 

Touch is a universal aspect of human interaction – all people touch and are touched by others. However, there are a lot of differences in the amount of touching that people do. Diabiase and Gunnoe (2004) tell us that touching patterns appear to vary by gender, culture, and age, so it’s important to be aware of those differences before you commit a workplace faux pas in an important business meeting with a group of clients.
